We all get confused from time to time– I know I sure do! Nothing to be ashamed of, but we want to be aware of it. A specific area where confusion arises is the difference between right and easy. Just because something is right, does not mean that it will be easy. It is right to eat and to live healthily, but that certainly does not mean it is easy (especially when Yvette comes in and sits a big bowl of fresh, delicious peaches covered in whipped cream in front of me). It is not easy to resist temptation, and the Bible reminds us that we all have at least one area “that we easily fall into” (Hebrews 12:1 TPT). It is right to live morally pure. It brings security, blessings, and reward, but it does not mean it is easy. We all know it is right to love all people regardless of who they are, but some people sure do not make it easy to love them. Regardless of what the “right” thing is, it does not automatically result in being easy.
Life situations always involve a choice of some kind. Choosing “right,” whether it is easy or not, is something we all will face throughout the course of our lives. I wish I could say that as we mature, grow up, or get older right becomes easy—it won’t. However, it is always going to be right to trust the Lord, walk in love, live in faith, obey and submit to God’s plan for your life. When someone has hurt you, no matter the circumstance, it is right to forgive them, but seldom is it easy. Procrastinating by putting that important task off until later may be easy in the moment, but I am sure we can all think of times when doing the “right” thing would have saved us a lot of trouble in the end. I only needed to run out of gas one time by putting it off to learn that lesson!
Often an easy thing to do would be to go with what we think or how we feel regardless of what is actually “right.” Feelings, opinions, and emotions will always influence what we do and how we live, but let’s make a point to not let them have the final decision. Living the way Christ has called us to live may not be easy, but it is right. Living according to the Word brings about blessings and peace. For example, being obedient to give financially, faithfully, wisely, and generously has always brought abundant blessing in our lives as the result of doing the “right” thing, yet many times it has not been easy to sacrifice our own wants, desires, or even needs to trust God’s timing and provision.
So, let’s clear up any confusion: “Right” is not always easy, and “easy” is not always right!
