Welcome to Questions of the People: Church Edition.
Question number 1: Why is serving so Important?
This is a huge question! One reason serving is important, it allows us to use or gifts. By gifts I mean what we enjoy and excel in. The uniqueness of each gift allows the church to run smoothly. If we all had the same gift then honestly what would the point be. If a person had the gift of socializing and was put behind a booth and never talked to anyone then the gift would be wasted. That is why we are unique. One of my favorite scriptures speaking in the beauty of using gifts is:
1 Peter 4:10. It reads: “every believer has received grace gifts, so use them to serve one another as faithful stewards of the many-colored tapestry of God’s grace.”
I love how that verse proves that God knew what he was doing when he created us.
Question number 2: What is the point of waking up early and serving?
Waking up early is actually good for your health and has been “scientifically” proven to increase your lifespan. This is probably a lie but spiritually Psalms 5:3 says:
“At each and every sunrise you will hear my voice as I prepare my sacrifice of prayer to you.”
This was written by David who was considered a man after God’s own heart. He saw the importance of waking up early and setting a tone for the day. Not just in serving, but everyday life, you can always set a tone for how the rest of the day is going to unfold. And not just for you, but also for the people you’re around and serving. If they encounter someone who is in an amazing mood then it can set the tone for worship, the sermon, in the Foyer, etc..
The third and final question is: Am I really helping others or am I just giving the church free labor?
I had the same question when I was serving. The answer is when you’re helping the church, others, and yourself you are also helping Jesus. To back this up spiritually we are going to look at
Matthew 25:35-40‘For when you saw me hungry, you fed me. When you found me thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I had no place to stay, you invited me in, and when I was poorly clothed, you covered me. When I was sick, you tenderly cared for me, and when I was in prison you visited me.’ “Then the godly will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty and give you food and something to drink? When did we see you with no place to stay and invite you in? When did we see you poorly clothed and cover you? When did we see you sick and tenderly care for you, or in prison and visit you? “And the King will answer them, ‘Don’t you know? When you cared for one of the least important of these my little ones, my true brothers and sisters, you demonstrated love for me.”
This is one of my favorite scripture passages because it shows God‘s heart. When he sees us, he sees little pieces of himself. We’re not just giving the church free labor we are serving little pieces of God!
Now this is a funny way to think about serving but in reality, these are frequently asked questions. It is important to realize how necessary it is for you to serve on Sunday. Not only do you help yourself and show love to others but by doing so you’re showing God that you love Him.
